5. Drug and alcohol testing basics
Every carrier with CDL drivers needs a drug and alcohol testing program. Owner-operators can't run their own random tests, so they join a consortium (C/TPA) that runs the random pool.
Before a new driver's first trip: a pre-employment drug test and a full Clearinghouse query with the driver's consent. Every year: a query on every driver.
If a driver tests positive, refuses a test, or has 0.04 alcohol or higher, they stop driving immediately. They must see a substance abuse professional (SAP), pass a return-to-duty test, then take follow-up tests. For owner-operators, the C/TPA handles that testing.
- We never run testing ourselves. Our drug-testing partner does.
- Never let a driver with a violation drive. Ever.
