Feel Like Yourself Again โ I found my dad's prescription bottle in the medicine cabinet last September. It still had pills in it. He'd been dead for 3 weeks.
I stood there in the bathroom of the house I grew up in, holding an orange bottle of Lipitor with 22 pills still rattling around inside it, and I had a thought that I'm only now able to put into words.
My dad followed every single instruction his doctor ever gave him for 11 years.
And it killed him anyway.
My name is Karen.
I'm 54 years old and I live in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, in a small blue house off of Calumet Drive with my husband Tim and a cat named Margaret who hates everyone except him.
My dad's name was Donald. Everybody called him Don.
He died on August 24th of last year. He was 64.
He died of a heart attack in the parking lot of the Piggly Wiggly on South Business Drive at 11:18 in the morning. He was carrying a 12 pack of Diet Rite back to his truck. The cashier told me he'd just been joking with her about the Brewers losing again. She said he looked fine.
His truck keys were still in his hand when the EMTs got there.
His Lipitor was at home in the medicine cabinet, where it had been every morning for 11 years.
I want to tell you about my dad's house, because that's where this story really starts.
After the funeral, after my brother Greg flew back to his life in Phoenix, after the casseroles stopped coming, somebody had to clean it out. Greg has 3 kids and a job and a wife who would not get on a plane for our father's belongings. So that was me.
I drove up there every Saturday for 8 weeks starting in September.
The house is on Riverdale Avenue. It's a small white ranch. My parents bought it in 1983 when my mom was pregnant with Greg. My mom passed in 2018 from her own heart attack at 64. My dad lived there alone for 6 years after.
The first Saturday I walked in and his work boots were by the back door.
Steel toed. Caked with mud from the property. He used to walk the back acreage every

Feel Like Yourself Again โ My granddaughter rescued me from my own bathroom on a Saturday afternoon and I haven't told a single person in my family the real reason.
Not my husband. Not my daughter. Not my sister who calls me every Sunday at 4 PM like clockwork.
The reason is that I couldn't turn the doorknob.
Not jammed. Not locked. Not stuck. The knob worked fine. My hand didn't.
Six years old. That's how old Maddie was when she pushed the spare key through the gap under the door and I knelt down on the bath mat in my own house and used the side of my palm to slide it toward me because I couldn't make my fingers close around it.
I want to tell you the rest of this story because I think there are women reading this who are going to recognize themselves in it. Not the bathroom part. The other part. The part where you stop telling people things. The part where you start doing math about what you can still do and what you can't.
My name is Brenda. I'm 57 years old. I live in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on the side of Signal Mountain where the road gets steep and the deer eat my hostas every spring. I taught second grade in Hamilton County for 28 years. I retired in 2022 because my hands stopped letting me write on the whiteboard for longer than 5 minutes at a stretch and I couldn't open the markers anymore without asking a 7 year old to do it for me.
My husband Dale is a retired electrician. He still does small jobs for our church and for the neighbors on our street. He's 61 and he could replace a ceiling fan in his sleep.
We have one daughter, Carrie. She lives in East Ridge with her husband Jason and our granddaughter Madeline, who everyone calls Maddie. Maddie was born in July of 2018, which makes her the kind of fearless half pint who climbs trees in church dresses and will eat anything you put in front of her.
Maddie spends Saturdays with me when Carrie has her real estate showings. Has since she was old enough to walk.
That's important.
Because the day my

Feel Like Yourself Again โ I walked into a transmission shop in Maumee, Ohio, last spring and watched a 54-year-old man cry next to a Buick.
He didn't know I saw him. He had his back to the showroom window. His shoulders were shaking and he was wiping his face with a shop rag that left a black streak across his cheek.
I'd gone in to ask about a noise my Honda was making.
I left without asking.
Let me back up.
My name is Diane. I'm 57. I live in a brick ranch off Glanzman Road on the south end of Toledo. Been there since 1998. My husband Ron died of a stroke in 2016 and I've been on my own ever since, except for a beagle named Petey who thinks he runs the house and is mostly right about that.
I work part-time at the front desk of a dental office on Heatherdowns. I've known the dentist, Dr. Marvin Kowalski, since our kids were in the same class at Glendale-Feilbach Elementary in the late 1990s. He kept me on after Ron died because he knew I needed the routine. I love him for that.
The man crying at the transmission shop was named Dale.
I didn't know that yet. I only learned his name three weeks later, in a parking lot, in a conversation I will remember for the rest of my life.
Here is what happened.
My Honda was making a clunking noise when I shifted into reverse. The kind of noise that sounds expensive. I'd been putting off taking it in for almost two months because I knew what taking it in meant. Sitting in a waiting room with stale coffee and a TV playing local news while a man in a polo shirt explained to me, slowly, what a transmission was.
I'd finally worked up to it on a Wednesday morning in April. Drove up Reynolds Road to a shop someone at church had recommended. Pulled into the lot. Walked in.
The bell on the door dinged. Nobody at the counter.
I waited. I looked at the rack of fan belts on the wall. I looked at a framed photo of a man holding a walleye next to a sign that said NO PERSONAL CHECKS.
Then I noticed movement through the doorway tha

Feel Like Yourself Again โ I ran into Darlene Kettering at the Rural King on a Saturday afternoon in April and I did not recognize her.
I mean that literally. I looked right at her and thought I was looking at her daughter.
She was standing at the end of the pet food aisle with a 40 pound bag of Purina in her cart, and I had my own cart pulled up to the shelf, and she smiled at me the way you smile at somebody you know from church but can't quite place.
I smiled back the same way. Polite. Vague. That Perryville smile.
Then she said, "Deanna Wehmeyer, don't you dare walk past me."
And I stood there in the middle of that aisle at 3:47 in the afternoon and my whole face got hot because it was Darlene. It was Darlene Kettering, who I graduated Perryville Senior High School with in 1983. Who sat next to me in Mrs. Kruse's typing class. Who I had seen at the IGA maybe 8 months ago and thought looked as tired as I felt.
I hadn't recognized her. Because she didn't look tired anymore.
She laughed at my face. She actually threw her head back and laughed, right there next to the Kibbles n Bits, and she said, "Honey, it's the same thing that happened to Peggy Ott when she saw me at Mass last Sunday. Come here."
And she pulled a bag of dog food out of her cart and set it back on the shelf so we could talk without her holding 40 pounds of it.
I want to tell you what she told me in that aisle. Because it changed my life, and I do not use that phrase lightly.
But first I have to tell you what she was looking at.
My name is Deanna. I'm 61 years old. I've been the cafeteria manager at Perryville Elementary School for the last 17 years. If your kid went through 3rd grade in this town between 2008 and now, I probably made them a pizza on a Friday.
I've lived in Perry County my whole life. I grew up on a little farm out toward Sereno, in a house that my daddy built with his brother. I married Gary Wehmeyer in 1986 at St. Vincent de Paul, and we bought the little brick house
